A national outdoor retail chain director has been awarded Yorkshire’s most prestigious professional financial accolade.

43 year-old David Hanney, chief finance officer with Sheffield-based GO Outdoors was revealed as Best Finance Director of a Ltd Company at the Yorkshire Finance Director of the Year Awards held at Rudding Park, Harrogate.

In 5 years with the outdoor clothing, equipment and camping retailer, David has been at the financial helm as the company has expanded from just seven stores to more than 30 nationwide from Clydebank to Exeter.

Yorkshire Finance Director of the Year Awards is the leading competition of its kind in Yorkshire and is sponsored by Ernst & Young, Santander Corporate Banking, Sewell Recruitment Group and Squire Sanders Hammonds.

David Hanney said,

“This is a very special award coming during the busiest year in GO Outdoors’ history. In May we secured a £30 million three-year financial package from Lloyds Banking Group. This will enable is to open ten more stores and create 500 retail jobs annually.

“And In April private equity firm 3i took a significant minority stake in GO Outdoors, providing a further cash injection.

“The award is testimony to the incredible GO Outdoors success story. Finance is playing its part of course. But, for me, it’s a joy to be part of a multi-skilled management team creating outstanding retail experiences for customers who share our own passion for the outdoors.”

David studied at the University of Manchester – Institute of Science and Technology, before going on to enjoy financial roles with Ernst and Young; Great Universal Stores; Thorntons and latterly Sheffield-based GO Outdoors.
