Monster mirror carp breaks World Record

TOP DUTCH angler Lizette Beunders has broken the Ladies World Carp Record, with an 84 lb 5 oz monster mirror called Shoulders from Abbey Lakes in France.

Lizette was celebrating her anniversary with partner Bianca Venema when she took the gigantic fish in a shared huge haul of specimen carp on 14 acre Heron Lake on the six pool complex. Bianca chipped in with fish to ovber 54 lb.

Over a week of hauling, the pair started off with four over 50 lb and eight from 35-40 lb before Lizette then took Shoulders after having to drive a huge distance back home briefly for work.

Brute of a bream

FORMER British Record bream holder Lee McManus returned to Swithland Reservoir, Leicestershire, for this 16 lb slab, which is just 10 oz below his best.

Lee shot to fame in July 1999 when he shocked the angling world with his mega bream.

Lee from Birstall in the same county opted for long range tactics where he fished three buoyant rubber casters on a small Fox Maggot Clip to a size 10 hook with a 10 lb fluorocarbon hook link.

Seal of disapproval!

A RAMPAGING seal has been decimating fish stocks on the River Severn around Worcester – nearly 100 miles from the sea!

The mammal – thought to be a common seal that grows to over 6 ft long and weighing 290 lb – has been entertaining many anglers even if it has meant poor sport.

Local Angler’s Mail reader Paul Archer was shocked when he saw it while fishing at Diglis Weir.

Paul said: ‘As if cormorants, goosanders and otters aren’t enough to contend with, there is now a seal!

‘I had just started fishing this morning when I heard a snort just downstream from me, I looked, and nearly fell off my chair when I saw a seal bobbing up and down in the water!

‘It caught several good sized barbel, a salmon, a zander and a lot of other fish during the course of the day I managed three small barbel, which I suppose wasn’t bad considering the competition!

Near 9 lb Thames chub!

THE River Thames has again shown its pedigree as one of the leading big fish venues in the country.

In a crazy week of sport, Tom Hussey proved that by toughing out the cooler conditions can mean some stunning results with a chub scaling 8 lb 10 oz and a barbel of 12 lb 2 oz.

Targeting the mighty river at Lower Sunbury, Surrey, both fish fell in quick succession to luncheon meat.

Gigantic 259 lb catfish

GERMAN duo Horst Grieb and Benjamin Gründer had to joing forces to land one of the biggest wels catfish ever with this 117.5 kilo – 259 lb – beast from Italy’s River Po.

They were fishing with Rhino Black Cat guided tours and the successful method was a “top-water” bait presentation from the overhanging trees using thin release lines.

Hungarian angler Zsedely Attila set a new all-tackle IGFA record 297 lb wels catfish from the Po in 2011.
