PROLIFIC whacker catcher Steve Day finally got his target when he landed a 51 lb 4 oz mirror – despite tangling his rod round his second rod.
The British Carp Study Group member, who struck at a private Essex lake, explained: ‘Despite landing ten 40s from May to October last year, and a number of high 30s, the one fish I really wanted to catch was one of the biggest in the lake called Crinkle Tail.
‘Although I hadn’t fished very much this year because of work and family commitments, this being only my third session on the lake, little did I know the carp gods would be looking down on me.’

Rod licences lose as sports kick in
POOR weather and high profile televised events have seen rod licence sales fall.
New annual licences went on sale April 1 in England and Wales and have been followed by the wettest two months ever known in many areas, leading into first the Jubilee now football’s Euro 2012 with the Olympics to follow.
A decline in sales has seen the Environment Agency ‘beef-up’ licence checks to ensure that people are fishing legally.
EA bailiffs were out in force over the last long Bank Holiday weekend. They checked 7,175 anglers’ licences at 631 fisheries over the four days. Almost 500 anglers were found to be fishing without a licence and could face a hefty fine.

Pools the future for jumbo eels 
BARRY MCCONNELL showed the potential of commercial stillwaters for eels with this stunning 7 lb 11 oz super snake.
Barry, 54, made a five-fish haul over a two-night period at day ticket Spring Lea Fisheries, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.
Barry, from Ellesmere in the same county, said: ’It was interesting to find such a large eel in such a young fishery as it was only built in 1991.
‘Commercials seem to have incredible growth rates for eels and could be the way forward.
‘It’s a far cry from the wilderness fishing that I enjoy so much but I have to admit the fight was awesome, the size of the fish totally unexpected and I was in a state of shock for the rest of the night.
‘I must stress there is strictly no night fishing allowed at this fishery but the manager, Julian, is allowing members of the National Anguilla Club to go on with me for limited night fishing trials to survey the eel stocks.’

Martin James nets MBE
ONE of angling’s unsung heroes has finally got the credit he deserves in the form of the MBE.
Martin James author, broadcaster, conservationist and charity supporter has been made a Member of the Order of the British Empire the Queen’s Birthday Honours list.
He has been invited to an investiture at Buckingham Palace organised by the Central Chancery of the Orders of Knighthood in St. James’s Palace.
Martin, 74, who originally hailed from Kent but now resides in Lancashire has not even allowed the debilitating disease multiple sclerosis to hamper his exploits including numerous global angling feats.
