The Mighty Deerstalker

One of the hardest and most gruelling off-road runs around, The Mighty Deerstalker is an incredible test of endurance and agility. Taking in beautiful forests and crossing through tough terrain, rivers and even mountains; it’s an ultimate test devised by endurance specialists Rat Race. OMC Motor Group Ron Hill Accrington 10k and Fun Run

Thames Meander Marathon and Half Marathon

Type of Event: Marathon (26.2 miles) and Half Marathon (13.1 miles)

Skill Level: Beginner to Expert

As the name suggests this Marathon and Half Marathon works its way along the banks of the River Thames. One of the most scenic runs in London, the course loops its way around the YMCA Hawker Centre, Canbury Gardens and Barn Elms Rowing Club; and is ideal for those attempting their first endurance event due to its flat and picturesque nature.

Viking 100 Endurance Even

Location: Brook Lane, Reculver, Herne Bay
Type of Event: 100-mile Endurance Run

Skill Level: Intermediate to Expert

Held on the land where the Vikings first set foot in Britain, the Viking 100 Endurance Run is a 6.25-mile looping circuit on and around the local farmland. With a mixture of off-road trails, tarmac, concrete farm access roads and cycle tracks there is plenty of good terrain to run on. With a 6-hour timed challenge on the Saturday and an additional challenge to see how many laps of the circuit you can manage, plus the main event, participants have a number of different Viking-themed options and plenty of wonderful Kent countryside to do it in.

Vertical Rush

Skill Level: Beginner to Expert

Tower 42 is one of London’s most iconic buildings and while taking the stairs may not appeal to those who work there, tackling London’s third-tallest skyscraper does appeal to an increasing number of participants taking on the Vertical Rush challenge. With 42 floors and 932 steps standing between you and one of the most spectacular views across the capital, you can be one of 1,000 or more runners scaling the building individually or as a team of five for the charity, Shelter.

The Questars Dorset Coast Adventure Race

Take in some of Britain’s most picturesque coastline in this solo, pair or team adventure race along the Dorset coastline. With views out over the sea where you can spot the Needles and the Isle of Wight, and a mountain bike trail that takes on the Purbeck Hills around Corfe Castle; participants have the opportunity to either run and bike or run, bike and kayak in an attempt to complete this beautiful yet challenging circuit on the south coast.

Wild Mud Run

Osmaston Manor in Derbyshire is transformed into one of the UK’s muddiest obstacle courses for one weekend in March. Canalthon

Another great endurance event organised by Cannonball Events, Canalthon returns to the Lancashire-Yorkshire borders for an Ultra-Marathon unlike any other. Runners can test themselves on either 50km, 75km or 100km courses taking in mountains, hills, fells and trails that take in some of the most beautiful surroundings in the north of England. Greater Manchester Marathon

A marathon might not sound like the kind of thing you want to attempt as a beginner but the Manchester Marathon is one of the flattest on the circuit, making this the ideal place to get a real feel for what it is to complete a 26.2-mile run. Heading off from the start line between the city centre and Old Trafford football ground, runners can take the fast, flowing course at their own speed before heading back to the finish line at Old Trafford cricket ground.

Kielder Ultra

Highland Fling Ultra-Marathon

One of Scotland’s most popular trail races, the Highland Fling Ultra-Marathon returns in 2018 allowing as many runners as possible to see the wonderful sights of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. Covering 53 miles of rugged Scottish terrain along the West Highland Way, the marked course is 90% trail and 10% road meaning you’ll have to be well prepared for “the wall”. The total elevation of 7,500-feet means you’ll be running up and down plenty of hills, but trust us, the views will be well worth it!

Fellsman

Venturing out across rugged moorland and covering a total distance of 61 miles between Ingleton and Threshfield, the Fellsman event is a great way to test your endurance and see the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales at the same time. Going out across privately owned land it is a test of your physical endurance as well as your map-reading skills, and the event climbs over a total of 11,000-feet meaning you’ll need to be well prepared for the challenge.

Isle of Wight Challenge 2018

The Isle of Wight plays host to this now annual challenge series event whereby participants tackle the 106km circuit of the island. Starting out from Chale you can walk or run your chosen distance – the full challenge or you have the option of doing a half or quarter circuit – with some spectacular views on your lap. There are a number of rest stops and support along the way and you’ll experience everything from steep inclines and rugged terrain to tarmac and coastal paths.

Great Birmingham 10K

Pembrokeshire Coastal Ultra Races

Location: Pembrokeshire Coast National Park
Type of Event: Ultra Marathon

Skill Level: Expert

With a choice of three ultra-marathon events participants can explore every step of the Pembrokeshire Coast Path in an ultimate test of endurance. The Pembrokeshire 3-day stage race is a 100-mile ultra-marathon with an overnight stop at each of the stages; while the Pembrokeshire 180 is a 5-day challenge along the entire length of the Coast Path from Amroth to St Dogmaels. If you feel like pushing yourself in one day, the non-stop Pembrokeshire 100 is a race on the same stretch taking in 100-miles for a one-day challenge in incredible surroundings.

With around 4,700-feet of inclines in total, which is nearly one and a half times the height of Snowdon, you’ll need to be prepared to push on through the trail paths, woodland and boggy ground in order to tame the Preseli Beast.

Rat Race Dirty Weekend

With insane obstacles, endless amounts of mud and a festival-style campsite for participants to enjoy; the Dirty Weekend returns to the grounds of the beautiful Burghley House in Stamford in what has become one of the world’s largest assault courses. With either a 13-mile or 20-mile course to tackle, entrants have the ability to try a smaller option with 150 obstacles in their way or the full 200 obstacle course – or go even bigger with the Dirty Double, a 40-mile 400-obstacle circuit.

Zone 3 Monster Mojito

The course has been designed for both first-time triathletes and seasoned athletes alike on what is a fast and predominantly flat triathlon.

Bury to Clare Challenge 2018

Durham Trails 10

A new addition to the Urban Trails Series for 2018, the Durham Trails 10 is a 10-mile event that takes in many of the wonderful sights of this historic city. Beginning in the very heart of the City of Durham, more than 400 runners will head out and along the river before going into the city’s beautiful woodland and rising back towards the Cathedral and its wonderful grounds. Entrants have 3-hours to complete the marked circuit which ascends a total of 1,080 feet.

The Lake District offers tranquil surroundings and spectacular scenery, but it also offers a wonderful array of trail running. The Keswick Mountain Festival is a 50K trail race ultra-marathon that races across Fells, with this particular course graded “Very Hard” by organisers. The course itself is well marked throughout the 50k with views of the Watendlath, Borrowdale, Butteremere and Newlands Valleys. There are a mixture of wide tails, single tracks, long ascents and fast technical descents standing in your way; along with some potentially tricky terrain and the scenic valleys.

The Great North Swim

Wicklow Way Race

Although not in the UK we still felt this race was worth a mention in this year’s list simply because the beauty of Co. Wicklow is worth the battle. A part of the Irish Mountain Running Series, the Wicklow Way Race covers 127km of tough terrain along the infamous Wicklow Way towards Clonegal. Runners will have a maximum of 21 hours to complete the night race, starting at midnight and following the path north. The route itself is fully marked, providing runners with clear directions on where to go, enabling you to focus on overcoming the trail paths and tricks played by the light.

Great Strides Ultra Marathon

Rat Race Man vs Lakes 2018

As far as Ultra Marathons go this one is pretty surreal. We’ve come to expect plenty of variation, obstacles and challenges from organisers Rat Race but in the case of Man vs Lakes it’s gone to a whole new level. Participants begin with a fairly surreal crossing of Morecambe Bay and its treacherous quicksand (the Coast Guard is on-hand and an alternative route is planned if a safe crossing is not available). There is no swimming involved and the hilly terrain covers a total of 26.2 to 30 miles towards the finish at Coniston depending on the availability of the Bay crossing.

You can test your courage, cheerfulness and determination by undertaking one of the four tests that a Royal Marines recruit has to pass in order to gain their coveted Green Beret.  The Royal Marines Commando Challenge is run over the Royal Marines’ own endurance training course at Woodbury Common in Devon.  This event is owned by and raising funds for Devon Air Ambulance and The Royal Marines Commando Challenge

Rat Race Ultra Tour of Edinburgh

The Ultra Tour of Edinburgh is a truly unique event and the spiritual home of the Rat Race. This 55km challenge takes to the streets of the capital and begins with a burst down the most famous street in Scotland – the Royal Mile. Roads, paths, alleyways, crags, monuments, museums and more are there to be tackled or seen throughout the event along with a total of 3,000 feet of ascent and descent between the start and finish.
