August 1st celebrates the UK’s largest county 
As we all sit, scratching our heads wondering how on earth we’ve reached August already, the largest county in the UK today celebrates Yorkshire Day.
Since GO Outdoors had it’s humble beginnings in Sheffield, Yorkshire Day is something that resonates with the company. Many of us Yorkshire folk forget how lucky we are to have the Peak District and more on our door step.
We took to our Twitter and Facebook groups this morning to get an idea from customers what their favourite places in Yorkshire were and what we found were just how proud people are of their county.
Amid a few jeers of ‘My favourite place in Yorkshire is the Road to Lancashire’, the rose rivalry clearly still there, we were hit with locations such as: Quaint tea rooms in Harrogate, Chip shops and Ice Cream bars in Scarborough and Robin Hood’s bay. As well as scenic areas like Ingleton, Bolton Castle, The Pennines, Malham, The North York Moors, Whitby, Skipton and more.
Whether you live here or whether you’re a visitor, dust off the walking boots and try to check out a little of what Yorkshire has to offer this week. If you’re looking for an event to mark the occasion, The Yorkshire Post will be hosting their inaugural Yorkshire Day Festival, where they plan to extend their Yorkshire Day celebrations from August 1st to August 3rd at Harewood House in Leeds. During the festival you can sample some local food, drinks, and crafts as well as a host of activities for the kids.
Here are a few facts about the county fondly known as ‘God’s Own County’:
- Yorkshire is home to the ‘Rhubarb Triangle’ farming Yorkshire’s favourite treat.
- Yorkshire has nearly a third of the total area of National Parks across The North York Moors, part of the Yorkshire Dales and the Peak District.
- Yorkshire boasts two ‘areas of outstanding natural beauty’ (AONB)
- Aproximately 17% of Yorkshire is classed as Green belt land
- Hardraw Force in the Yorkshire Dales is England’s largest single drop waterfall
- For those who like a bit of a drink, Yorkshire is home to 80 real ale breweries and hosts the country’s fourth largest Beer festival in Rotherham.
- York was voted European tourism city of the year in 2009.
