UK’s biggest common carp!
GAVIN SKERRATT celebrated his birthday in style by catching the biggest common carp in the country at a whopping 56 lb 2 oz from Kent’s day ticket Strawberry Fields.
The fish is one of the biggest in the country and just pips the second biggest common from Berkshire’s massive Burghfield Lake that recently came out to current British record holder Austin ‘Ozzy’ Holness at 55 lb 4 oz.
Publicity shy Ozzy only made an exception of reporting his catches to the angling Press for his 67 lb 8 oz record but let Korda put the Burghfield common on their website at www.korda.co.uk

Pike attacks Angler’s Mail star
ANGLERS MAIL predator ace Andy Black has enjoyed the ecstasy and the agony of pike fishing, as our pictures clearly show.
Catch-wise Andy has had a good start to his pike season, boating a multiple catch of 20s from a local Midlands reservoir, topped by a stunningly coloured 27 lb croc caught straight after a sustaining nasty gash.
He tried a different spot to where he’d been before and after searching around found a small group of fish in a tightly-packed area in 18 ft of water, then set about catching them using small jerkbaits and rubber shads
Andy, who will be writing on a more regular basis in the Mail’s coming Pike Scene added: ‘On the first cast I had a nice fish of 20 lb 4 oz, and then a couple of smaller fish around 15 lb before it went a bit dead, but I knew there were still fish there as I kept having a few follows one from a very big fish indeed.
‘Because of the follows, I kept changing lure colour until I found one that they wanted, and after a few swaps to a darker colour I managed a good take from an angry 21 lb specimen.’
This was a fish that bit back though – during its unhooking, the pike managed to flip and badly cut Andy’s finger.

Bivvy blaze!
A CARP angler has warned of the dangers of cooking near your bivvy after suffering horrific burns due to a cooker malfunction.
James Baker was set on fire in the terrible accident at day ticket Morehouse Farm Fishery in East Sussex but was fortunate not to be more badly hurt.
Brighton-based James explained: ‘I was fishing at Morehouse for the carp and cats. After getting set up, which took me longer than usual as I had to wait for permission to fish a certain swim, I got down to the business of cooking my chicken chow mein.’

82 lb carp follows an 88-pounder!
STUART ARKELL became one of a select band to notch two 80 lb-plus carp when he matted The Brown Fish at 82 lb from Luke Moffatt’s Le Graviers.
Upminster, Essex-based Stuart followed up Scar Fish at 88 lb 8 oz from the same venue three years ago with the second biggest in the popular French venue. He added four 40s to 48 lb, a 33 lb leather and a 27 lb 4 oz “pastie”.

Otter kills carp as TV cameras roll on John Wilson
FILMING of a well-balanced documentary on the otter problem is fully underway and it quickly uncovered proof of the ongoing nightmare – a freshly killed carp on John Wilson’s lake.
Focusing on the increasing problem in the county of Norfolk the first phase of the documentary is to highlight exactly what’s going on, on the ground.
Amongst those involved is angling’s Mr TV, John Wilson MBE.
Documentary producer Dan Short told the Mail: ‘Norfolk’s otter population is reaching epidemic proportions. On the morning of filming with John Wilson, John found that his own carp lake had fallen victim to a recent otter attack.’
