Christmas crafts for kids

Homemade Christmas tree ornaments

Create personalised Christmas tree decorations with your children using natural materials. Start with salt dough ornaments—kids can shape and paint these unique decorations and bake them to solidify their designs. Make sure an adult supervises the use of an oven and sets a timer. Go outdoors to find pinecones to turn into mini Christmas trees or festive baubles. For a rustic element, try crafting star shapes using sticks tied together with string. These handmade ornaments add an earthy touch to your Christmas tree and can be a keepsake to treasure year after year.

Gingerbread birdhouses

Encourage a love for wildlife by crafting gingerbread birdhouses as a family. You can buy a kit or bake the gingerbread pieces yourself if you want more of a challenge. Assemble the structure and cover it in peanut butter, then sprinkle birdseed generously over the surface. Place the finished birdhouse in your garden, ideally on a table or elevated spot where birds feel safe enough to eat. This can attract local wildlife to your garden and support these species through the winter.

Make log or cork reindeer

This craft uses corks or small logs to bring Rudolph to life at home. Adults can use a small screwdriver to carefully make holes in the cork or logs, and children can insert small sticks for legs and a neck. Hunt for small branched sticks to create antlers, and trim the legs to even lengths so your reindeer stands up securely. This simple project is great for kids learning basic crafting techniques with adult supervision. The finished reindeer will add a homemade touch to your festive decor.

Homemade wreaths

Harness your creativity by using natural materials to make a homemade Christmas wreath. Gather holly, pine branches, berries, and even dried orange slices to weave into your wreath for a seasonal look. Use a wireframe to form the shape and twine to secure the natural pieces. Kids can help with gathering materials and arranging them. This project is a fantastic way to bring nature indoors, creating an eye-catching decoration to welcome guests this festive season.

Build a snowman

Building a snowman is a classic holiday activity if you’re lucky enough to have a snowy Christmas. Kids love going outdoors to roll snowballs, stack them, and dress their frosty sculptures with hats, scarves, and stick arms. If snow is scarce, try creating an indoor snowman by stacking cardboard boxes wrapped in white paper or crafting a felt snowman on the wall. This creative alternative brings the fun indoors while keeping the festive spirit alive, no matter the weather.

Methodology

To reveal the most Christmassy cities and towns, we created a seed list of locations using sources such as VisitEngland, Time Out, VisitWales, The Independent, and Northern Ireland World.

We used Komoot to source the total number of hiking trails to the nearest point for each location. We then filtered this by ‘easy trails.’ We also calculated the number of easy hiking trails as a percentage of total trails. This data was calculated on 15/10/2024.

Using Google Keyword Planner, we searched terms such as ‘Christmas walks’ and ‘winter trails,’ looking at the total number of searches in each location from October 2023 to September 2024.

To source the number of pubs and restaurants, we used Tripadvisor, filtering by ‘bars and pubs’ and ‘restaurants’ on 16/10/2024 and then calculating this per 1,000 population using the latest ONS population figures and City Population, looking at 2021/2022 data. For London, we looked at the total number of ‘cheap eats,’ ‘mid-range,’ and ‘fine dining’ separately and added them together to get the overall figure.

Tripadvisor was also used to source family-friendly pubs and restaurants, filtering by ‘good for kids/child-friendly’ on 11/10/2024. This data was then calculated as a percentage of each location’s restaurants, bars, and pubs.

We looked at each location on Airbnb to determine the number of cabins in and around each area, filtering this data by ‘a weekend in December’ to get results specific to the festive season. We then noted the search results within approximately 30 miles on 15/10/2024.

We used ArcGIS to gather the average annual snow days over the last 30 years.

Using the official website of each event holder, we sourced the number of days each location’s Christmas market is open, looking at their opening and closing dates for 2024. For places that have yet to confirm their official dates for this year, we used 2023 dates.

We looked at one of each location’s most popular ice skating rinks, highlighting the session cost as of 11/10/2024 using the official site for each location.

Where applicable, we included the cost of a single adult ticket and a single child ticket. If all members of the public pay the same price, we noted the adult and child prices as the same. For towns and cities that do not have an ice rink, we included the closest location within the limit of approximately a 30-minute drive using Google Maps. We used Google Reviews to source the review rating of each ice rink out of five as of 11/10/2024.

We created two indexes to highlight the top Christmas locations in the UK and the best locations for families. The indexes considered the average scores out of 10 for each relevant factor across each area and an overall score out of 10 for each location.
