For anyone near the Lancashire region, here are some of the great activities our friends at the Lancashire division of the Mountain Rescue are holding this month.If you’re not near the north of England, then don’t worry, we will follow nationwide events, so keep your eyes peeled for more updates!
Mountain rescue are a self funded organization and they were established in 1928 and there are currently 56 teams in England and Wales. They operate with no government funding what so ever, which means they have to fundraise all the money themselves to operate the teams. The money raised pays to purchase equipment for the volunteers which includes protective clothing, climbing equipment, ropes, stretchers, rescue vehicles and much more. They are called out through the 999 and 112 networks 365 days a year, day and night, in all conditions. They are there for both rural and semi-urban emergences such as the Cumbrian floods, the Raoul Moat, /Derrick Bird shootings and also searches for missing persons. They also rescue walkers and mountaineers; but ironically 80% of people rescued are not serious mountaineers – they are people who have taken a wrong turn or had an accident, so it’s really important to support the great work they do.
