Staycations have been growing in popularity over the past few years, and the past 18 months has created a UK holiday boom. We’re so lucky in the UK to have access to stunning scenery and fantastic outdoor adventures, all on our doorstep. It’s easy to see why the UK is this year’s number one holiday destination.
We know that for some of you, jetting off on your jollies may be your usual summer go-to, but this year why not try holidaying-at-home? It can be just as fun and you can forget about forever changing green and amber lists!
Here’s our guide of essentials that you should consider when planning a staycation this summer.
The most important part of any staycation is selecting your accommodation. The UK is home to a fantastic array of campsites, B&Bs and interesting accommodation ripe for choosing. If you’re camping then we recommend buying a tent that gives you and your fellow campers the space and comfort you need. Whether you’re a large family or solo adventurer, we have a tent to suit you. For more information on getting the most out of your staycation, check out our blog on practical staycation advice for campers.
Staycations are all about exploring the local area around you, taking walks or visiting attractions. This means that a large portion of your days are out most likely going to be spent on foot.
For strolls along the seaside or if you’re planning a trip to the beach, then a comfy pair of sandals are a must! Providing as much grip, support and cushioning to the the foot as a pair of walking shoes, a good pair of sandals are perfect for walking along what can often be uneven and sometimes pretty rough ground. Sandals offer you flexibility and casual style as well, making them an essential for your summer staycation.
If the beach seems a bit far out, then you could take the family out for a hike in the hills. One of the most fun family activities, Hiking provides a break from everyday life to get lost in the country for a few hours to see what the great outdoors has to offer. Make sure you’re well-equipped with a pair of quality walking shoes, you don’t want to end up with blisters. Take a look through our walking shoes here to find your perfect pair.
Summer clothing is an absolute essential for any staycation! If you’re going to be out and about all day, you’re going to want to ensure you stay as comfortable as you can throughout the entire thing! That’s why we have an extensive range of great tees and shirts that you can wear all summer long to keep looking cool and feeling cool. As well as casual shirts and tees, we have plenty of technical tees.
Ideal for those who like to keep at the grind, our baselayers are designed using technical fabrics to manage moisture, keeping you cool, comfortable and dry outdoors.
Now I know we’re planning for our Summer staycation here, but it is still a good idea to bring some weatherproof gear in case the weather does what it does best in Britain and takes a turn for the worst. At GO Outdoors we’re proud to stock an extensive range of weatherproof garments including waterproof jackets and windproof layers. By picking up a windproof jacket, you’re just providing yourself with that extra level of protection against the elements if it starts to get a bit nippy. We also recommend taking a waterproof with you just in case as well, there’s a good chance you may not need it, since it is summer after all, but it’s better to be safe and dry with one than to get drenched without one.
You’re going to need something to carry all your belongings in when you head out. A day pack is the perfect solution for staycationers as they’re compact, lightweight and durable; plus can fit plenty of gear inside of them without weighing you down on your adventures. Find a style of daypack that suits you and your staycation needs from our huge range here.
If you want to go slightly bigger, why not consider a duffel bag? Great for B&B stays or camping trips, they are rugged and provide great storage for all your essentials.
If you’re going out on a day trip, to the beach for example, pick up some fun things to take along with you to set up your own little base camp. That way you have your own little home away from home where you and the whole family can relax, have fun and enjoy your summer together. We recommend either a pop-up tent or beach shelter, this way you have a nice sheltered area to relax if you needed or somewhere to store your belonging safely.
Why stop there? If you’re going somewhere for a full day why not bring some furniture and other bits and bobs along with you to really make yourself feel at home. Grab some camping chairs, a picnic blanket and a cooler for some drinks and just sit back and relax; you’re on staycation now.
